MIT Prof says three-way battle looms over navigation wars

imageRemember the PDA, the “personal digital assistant” that was literally held out as the ultimate in portable technology? Even as PDA’s fade from the technology horizon, another currently hot “P” device - the PND, or “personal navigation device” - may soon follow, says an MIT Sloan School of Management expert on business strategy, technology, and innovation.

PND products, such as Tom Tom and Garmin, may remain popular for a few years, “but life is getting tough very quickly” for PND makers, according to MIT Sloan Senior Lecturer Michael A. M. Davies. PND’s face a growing challenge not only from cell phones, which are increasingly equipped with high-end navigation programs, but from a less obvious competitor: automobile makers. As software expands the capabilities of PND’s, car manufacturers are in a unique position to make their use both practical and safe, he says.

Super Talent Ships Tiny Gold 8GB Storage Device
Posted by Bill Landon in Consumer_Electronics | General_PDA | Mobile_Phones | Personal_Computer | Consumer_Electronic_News | General_PDA_News | Personal_Computer_News | Mobile_Phone_News | (0) Comments |

imageSuper Talent Technology today announced the PICO-C Gold, a 24-carat gold plated, water resistant USB drive that weighs less than a nickel (~4.7 grams), is smaller than an SD card, and can store over 2,000 MP3 songs.

Super Talent uses the chip-on-board (COB) technology to squeeze 8GB of Flash into an impressively small 31.3mm x 12.4mm x 3.4mm gold plated steel case. The Pico-C Gold is shock resistant, water resistant, and has up to 200X (30MB/sec) transfer speeds. The Pico-C Gold includes a sturdy gold chain, and looks more like a fashion accessory than a high performance Flash drive. Time to get your geek bling on.

The 8GB Pico-C Gold drive, part number STU8GPCG, is available from NewBiiz and NewEgg today for under $40.

imageWe’re not cool enough to have a 3G iPhone yet; I actually go out and do stuff on the weekends so that whole standing in line thing just did not appeal to me. In all reality it’s most likely my ADHD would get my arse kicked while in line...lol. However Sara did stand in line on Saturday only to see the last 16gig unit sell to the person right in front of her...DOH! So in about 7 days a shiny new white unit will arrive and her smile will return.

In the meantime here are some links to all that is 3G iPhone that you would or could ever possibly want to know from our friends over at Engadget and Engadget Mobile.

Toshiba Portege G910 does Windows Mobile 6
Posted by Bill Landon in Consumer_Electronics | General_PDA | Mobile_Phones | Windows_Mobile | Windows_Mobile_News | Consumer_Electronic_News | General_PDA_News | Mobile_Phone_News | (0) Comments |

imageOur buds over at pocketnow have taken the close look at the new Toshisba Portege G910...hmmm I guess new is a subjective term.

I’m too lame to paraphrase so let’s quote:

INTRODUCTION
Toshiba has a new one for us, the Portege G910, which aims to be a top choice for business users (especially in Europe) who want to go Windows Mobile. It features two screens, one of which sports the highest resolutions that Windows Mobile can support, 800x480. That’s 25% more pixels than found on a VGA screen. But what about the rest of the phone? Does it perform well in daily use, or should Toshiba stick to making Notebooks and X-Ray machines? Read on for our thorough review!

WHAT’S HOT
Let’s do a rundown of specifications. The G910 has the commonly used Qualcomm MSM7200 CPU running at 400MHz. It is a triband GSM phone with EDGE/HSDPA, has 256MB ROM and 128MB RAM, WiFi (b & g), aGPS, Bluetooth 2.0, and USB 1.1. The camera on the rear can capture photos at 2MP and includes an LED fill light, while the camera on the front, used for video calls, supports VGA resolution. Powering it all is a 1320mAh battery. For even more specs on the G910, check out PDAdb.net.

So they liked the screen resolution, the keyboard feel, Opera browser the all sorts of wireless hookups and external OLED. So what’s not to like?? How about the laggy performance, it’s buggy, not USB 2.0 compatible, no WinMo 6.1, keyboard lag, only tri-band, poor camera, lame fingerprint implementation, cheapy feeling, bulky...and I could go on but i will let pocketnow give you the deets:

When WVGA Doesn’t Matter…

Engadget Mobile Stalks FCC
Posted by Bill Landon in Consumer_Electronics | General_PDA | Mobile_Phones | Consumer_Electronic_News | General_PDA_News | Mobile_Phone_News | (0) Comments |

imageLOL...wow these guys must have a lot of spare time to pour over those dry FCC filings. However the good news is at least they do a bang up job and their bff the FCC has not filed that restraining order for stalking yet…

Quote: We here at Engadget Mobile tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there, we’ve gathered up all the raw info you may want (but probably don’t need). Enjoy!

Garmin's Touchscreen Oregon Series Unearthed for Outdoor Enthusiasts
Posted by Bill Landon in Consumer_Electronics | General_Interest | General_PDA | Consumer_Electronic_News | General_PDA_News | Science | (0) Comments |

imageThe waterproof Oregon features a high-sensitivity GPS receiver, preloaded mapping and a high-resolution, color 3-inch screen that reacts as users tap or drag through menus and options. Garmin’s new HotFix feature automatically calculates and stores critical satellite information and can use that information to quickly calculate a position without waiting for data collection from the satellites.

The Oregon 400t gives hikers preloaded U.S. topographic maps in state-of-the-art 3D elevation perspective. The Oregon 400i offers anglers shoreline details, depth contours and boat ramps for U.S. inland lakes and
navigable rivers. The Oregon 400c is a saltwater specialist, providing chart coverage for the coastal U.S. and Bahamas. The Oregon 300 features a worldwide basemap with shaded relief. The Oregon 200 provides a basemap that can be easily supplemented with additional mapping or charts for your adventures on and or at sea.

The Oregon series plays well with others, as the 400t, 400c, 400i and 300 allow for wireless exchange of tracks, waypoints and geocaches between other Oregon units and Colorado models. Each of these models is equipped with a barometric altimeter and electronic compass and is compatible with Garmin’s heart-rate monitors and speed/cadence sensors.

Weighing only 6.8 ounces with 16 hours of life from two AA batteries, the Oregon has a microSD card slot that is ideal for loading additional MapSource detail. For more about the Oregon’s features, pricing and availability, go to http://www.garmin.com and http://www.garmin.blogs.com

Knight Rider GPS by Mio Brings K.I.T.T. to Every Car
Posted by Bill Landon in Consumer_Electronics | General_PDA | Windows_Mobile | Windows_Mobile_News | Consumer_Electronic_News | General_PDA_News | (0) Comments |

imageOh man, I need a new section called kitsch. I just saw on engadget that Mio has finally released the Knight Rider GPS.

The Knight Rider GPS features a 4.3-inch widescreen interface, which allows for more on-screen information and additional details about upcoming intersections. More than four million points of interest will assist drivers in locating gas stations, emergency assistance, hotels and restaurants—turning every trip on the road into an adventure. Like the original K.I.T.T., which had multiple modes including normal, auto and pursuit cruising, the Knight Rider GPS allows drivers to choose routing modes including the fastest or shortest route and highway preference. In a race against mobile assassins or your child’s soccer schedule, the Knight Rider GPS also features a SiRFInstantFixIII GPS receiver, which delivers faster GPS signal locks so drivers can navigate as soon as they are ready to drive.

Well it can’t be all bad with pre-loaded maps of the U.S. and Canada, the Knight Rider GPS is ready to operate in minutes with no computer set-up required. It has a 20 Channel (SiRFstarIII), WAAS Enabled GPS Receiver, 4.3” TFT with Touch Screen, uses SD/MMC and USB 2.0 and is available later this quarter for $269.95.

Visit http://www.KnightRiderGPS.com for more information.
