Guide to Wireless Internet Access Through the Cellular/PCS networks
Carl Oppedahl has a great article on many of the mysteries of Wireless Internet from the various wireless providers. His article gets updated periodically so be sure to check back every few weeks for the latest information. Here is a blurb and link to the full document:

News flash! AT&T announces a service that is $80 per month for all you can eat, that claims to be faster than Sprint, and that works outside the US. And indeed it is sometimes faster than Sprint, as indicated by this screen shot:

My preliminary findings are as follows.

Yes, the AT&T Edge service is sometimes twice as fast (100-130k) as Sprint, previously the fastest PCS-based Internet access service (50-70k). But other times the Edge service is slower (30k or so) than Sprint.

The Edge service works by giving up to four time slots of GPRS service to a single user. The four time slots, each good for about 30k of bandwidth, thus can add up to around 120k or so. This only works in cells where AT&T has loaded the Edge software into the cell; otherwise all you get is the usual single GPRS time slot and performance crummier than Sprint.

The way they have configured it, you get the four time slots (100-130k) only for downloading. For uploading, they only give you two time slots (50-65k).
