Handspring's PDA-phone launched
image The much-anticipated Handspring Treo 600 PDA-phone has just been launched in Europe by French mobile operator Orange.

Its makers Handspring are pinning a lot of hope on the device, which is the result of the company's new emphasis on wireless devices that allow operators to easily add or remove features.

The Treo 600 enters a young but growing market for smart phones in Europe. Orange also carries the SPV, a phone that uses the rival Microsoft Windows operating system. U.S. electronics giant Motorola has also said it will launch its new Windows-based MPx200 smart phone in Europe soon.

The phone will cost US$478 in the U.K., 399-459 euros (US$449-516) in France, depending on contract, according to news agency Reuters. It can run on either CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) networks. Handspring has made the device a foundation on which carriers and Handspring can add new software and features. Carriers will be able to sell it in different colors or with different software titles.
