CMC Magnetics Launches New PDA Line
pic Dublin, CA – CMC Magnetics Corporation, the worldwide data storage media and hardware powerhouse, shakes up the business PDA market with its launch of a slim, high-tech PDA line, the PPC Series. Powered by Microsoft’s WinCE operating system, these new PDAs offer unbeatable power, versatility and expandability, a full-color LCD screen optimized for high-quality video playback, and the ability to add wireless data support.

Robert Tsai, Director of Marketing for CMC’s North American subsidiary Hotan Corporation, said, “Business users who work every day with Microsoft programs like Word and Excel need a PDA that lets them easily swap files between it and their desktop PC. CMC’s new PPC Series gives them all the power of Microsoft’s portable operating system in a small, sleek package that’s expandable to support numerous advanced wireless applications.”

The two devices in the line, the PPC-500 introduced today and the forthcoming PPC-510, do not lack for power. Powered by the Intel StrongARM 206 MHz processor running WinCE 4.0, the units come standard with 64MB of SDRAM built-in. Twin Flash Type II and SD expansion slots offer a prospective 32MB memory boost. A full-color TFT-LCD display, with LED front light, makes the device as beautiful to use as it is to see. Operation is also a snap via the ergonomically pleasing jog dial that permits one-handed control. Fast data transfer with desktop PCs is enabled through a USB port, and a wireless IrDA port allows the unit to easily share data with other mobile devices.

From this foundation of power, the PPC Series can be easily expanded to support many advanced functionalities. Looking to send and receive e-mail wirelessly? Add a WLAN card and the PPC Series can be online anywhere there’s cellular phone service. Users can also add a WiFi (802.11b) card to interface with business or home WiFi networks. And power users will want to note that the PPC-510 supports GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), which enables high-speed Internet browsing and e-mail, plus visual communications, multimedia messaging and location-based services.

The PPC Series’ numerous vertical market applications will also appeal to business users. By combining a WLAN card for wireless communication and a web camera, such as a portable model from eCAMit, the PDA turns into a remote controllable security solution perfect for the home or office. Two other add-ons allow the PPC Series to function where previously a huge PC was required: as a barcode data management system, and as a receipt printer solution (enabled via the device’s IrDA port).

Finally, by connecting the device to a wireless phone, a business user can use the PPC-500 or PPC-510 to store phone numbers and then dial them. That kind of timesaving utility will make the PPC Series invaluable to business professionals upgrading from an older PDA or making the leap to a digital organizer for the first time.
