ISC West -- Datastrip today introduced the DSVII-SC (Smart Card Edition), the market's fastest and most versatile handheld ID card reader with an integrated fingerprint sensor for matching a live fingerprint to a stored biometric template. The two-pound portable unit can complete identity verification in as little as one second, and is the only device in its class to support contact and contactless smart cards, multiple biometric algorithms, and wired as well as 802.11 and Bluetooth wireless communication for use in virtually any mobile identity verification scenario.
This versatility gives integrators the ability to meet the needs of disparate identification projects with one hardware platform, and ensures that end users will not have to switch their equipment if they change or upgrade their applications in the future. The DSVII-SC can be used for identity confirmation in locations where there is no physical door structure to accommodate stationary readers. Applications include: -- Employee access cards, national ID cards, driver's licenses, health cards, the new contactless-based passports, and other identity documents. -- Federal security initiatives such as the US-Visit, Common Access Card (CAC) and Transportation Worker ID Card (TWIC) programs.\ -- Border crossings, customs checkpoints, military bases, seafaring vessels, trucking company docks, building entry points or parking lot gates, and so on. "As security officials are expanding their safety net to include biometric identification and locations that are not practical for stationary screening equipment, there is a growing demand for portable solutions that can handle biographic and biometric ID checks in a single-pass solution," said Craig Hill of SI International, a federal systems integrator based in Reston, VA. "Datastrip's new reader gives integrators a secure solution that can be used for nearly any identification project because it has built-in support for such a wide range of technologies." The DSVII-SC incorporates a smart card reader that can read identity data stored on both contact and contactless ID cards, a 500 dpi fingerprint sensor for on-the-spot one-on-one biometric verification, and a large color digital touchscreen display that presents decoded photographs, biographic information and/or signatures for visual comparison with the cardholder. The touchscreen enables operators to select commands without scrolling through menus, and is readable in direct sunlight or low-light conditions. Unlike similar products that utilize PDA processors, the Datastrip product is built on a Hitachi-based RISC processor for maximum performance. It supports 802.11 and Bluetooth wireless communication for data and fingerprint transmission for identity search and verification against a back-end system; can store data for periodic uploading; and can operate either as a stand-alone solution without an external database or as a PC-based solution tied to a back-end database. In addition, the DSVII-SC offers significant benefits for programmers and integrators. It runs on the WindowsCE.NET operating system to permit development of any number of custom applications; provides an open platform supporting the market's leading biometric algorithms; and employs Microsoft.NET-based SDKs for easy integration. Using the software developer's kit, for example, system integrators can develop 1 to N searching applications that will allow the DSVII-SC to be utilized for large-scale ID applications where biometric identify confirmation is required in real time. "Today's identity verification solutions require flexibility, mobility, and multiple technologies. The DSVII-SC is designed with that in mind," said Steve Blackmore, Datastrip Chief Executive Officer. "It can be used simply to do a photographic or biometric match, for biographic or biometric screening only, or for both, and it can go anywhere that identity checks are needed. With the combination of versatility and portability, it equips security managers with broad capabilities that never were possible before." Specifications and Availability The DSVII-SC comes with an upgradeable 64MB user internal flash and 64MB SDRAM of memory; an external CF slot is available for a memory upgrade. The product ships with a stylus for use on the touchscreen display and an AC adapter/charger. It runs on a rechargeable and user-replaceable Li-Polymer battery that provides up to eight hours of normal use. An optional second battery will double internal capacity; external battery packs and optional auto adapter/chargers are also available. The DSVII-SC is available immediately from Datastrip's network of VARs and system integrators. |
