Symbol Technologies and palmOne Testbeds Launched at the FedEx Institute of Technology
Mobility and data software firm eLearning Dynamics (eLD) (www.elearningdynamics.com) announced today the launch of a four member research and development alliance led by the newly established Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Workforce Co-Lab (www.adlnet.org), an initiative sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, headquartered at and also partnering with the FedEx Institute of Technology (http://fedex.memphis.edu/) and Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) (www.iismemphis.org), in Memphis. Extending their shared objectives in the corporate and government training sectors, the alliance members will collaborate on application testing and development, DoD standards and uses, and government funding initiatives. The alliance seeks to leverage shared goals among its members and advance applied technology and scientifically- based learning with commercialized solutions to train America's workforce of the future.

eLearning Dynamics will contribute development and product resources, as well as partner relationships, to the effort, and invited palmOne(R) (www.palmone.com) and Symbol Technologies, Inc. (www.symbol.com), to participate directly in the initiative. eLD selected palmOne and Symbol because of their strong positions in mobility hardware and enterprise mobility solutions, respectively, and their expertise in government vertical markets within their businesses. The companies will contribute the latest in WiFi- enabled Palm OS and Pocket PC devices.

The ADL Workforce CoLab will test, evaluate, and assist in advancing eLearning's LearnTrac(TM) and PocketClassroom(TM) suites of education and training solutions. According to Workforce Co-Director, Xiangen Hu, "eLearning Dynamics shares our vision to expand the reach of Advanced Distributed Learning. We have the common vision of improving outcomes in training and learning through innovative technologies. We are excited to assist Chase Weir and his team in building a testbed and development environment for his leading edge solutions at our showcase facilities, the FedEx Institute."

eLearning Dynamics' Chairman & Founder Chase Weir says, "We were honored to demonstrate our patented solutions recently at the grand opening of the Institute, a world class facility with some of the world's finest scientists and technologists. We're even more honored to announce our alliance with the facility's resident institutions, and truly excited to be among such a select group of initiatives that are driving changes and advances in technology use in all walks of life." Weir characterized the alliance as a key component of eLearning's continued push into workforce training and establishes a research and development beachhead in the Mid-South at the same time it expands its customer base in the region.

Speaking on behalf of the FedEx Institute of Technology, Executive Director, Jim Phillips says, "This alliance is exactly what the FedEx Institute is about -- bridging the gap between industry and academia." Assistant Director of Research Development, Eric Mathews adds, "The Institute will jointly pursue additional funding with eLD, ADL, and IIS to further improve the science and delivery of mobile and wireless solutions and services. Our collaborative efforts will help to more effectively and easily incorporate these kinds of tools into today's workforce training programs in both the public and private sectors. We anticipate a long and fruitful partnership." Mr. Mathews initiated and planned the alliance to further the missions of the ADL network, and the Workforce CoLab, while leveraging and expanding the talent and infrastructure assets at the FedEx Institute, including the renowned Institute for Intelligent Systems.

Dr. Art Graesser, Co-Director of the Institute for Intelligent Systems, said of the alliance, "You can spend years on the bleeding edge of scientific study and technology R&D and find that you're almost always in front of mass commercial use of your discoveries. It is very exciting to work with Chase Weir, a former student in my artificial intelligence studies, who is aggressively marrying mainstream, commercial adoption strategies with the current state-of-the-art in applied learning methods and technology components. I applaud our newly formed partnership and look forward to the complements it brings to our shared know-how and objectives." Dr. Graesser is one of the world's preeminent experts in cognitive science and discourse processing research. His projects have been funded by DARPA, DOD, NIH, NSF, and NASA, among many others, and span knowledge representation, question asking and answering, tutoring, text comprehension, inference generation, conversation, reading, education, memory, expert systems, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction.

eLearning Dynamics' CEO, Frank Mattson, formerly President of Scientific Learning, understands how to apply deep cognitive science to successful commercial uses, saying, "We're now fast on the course that worked so well at Scientific Learning, where we took a young company with unsurpassed science and packaged that know-how into leading software products that built a profitable and publicly traded company." Mattson said, "Our IP portfolio and ongoing R&D coupled with research and testing at the FedEx Institute is a powerful combination."
