Comdex Adventure Part One
pic We have returned from Comdex early. Over the next few days I will be posting pictures and info that I gathered during my 3 days in Las Vegas. This was my first Comdex and it was a learning experience, not just event but the whole Vegas culture. All in all it was a great time.

Rob and I arrived in Vegas around 11:30 Saturday night; originally we were to arrive on Sunday on National Airlines which you may or may not know is no longer around. Fortunately I have an MVP account with Alaska Airlines and was able to reschedule our flights. Upon entering the airport I was greeted by the musical sound of slot machines, there is a kind of soothing but exhilarating feeling to that sound. We made our way to baggage claim and then out to the cab line to head to the Best Western Mardi Gras.

Enter the Hotel of the Dammed

Upon entering the hotel we were greeted by a lounge signer crooning “You have arrived” or some such song directing it towards people who entered the hotel. It was actually kind of amusing in a way like when “Frasier” took that trip to Alaska on that cruise ship. We checked in and headed to the room. While the hotel was basically fine by most standards I was expecting something a little more grandiose for Las Vegas. The room was clean but spartan and had the appearance of years of wear. But I was here for business and figured I would not spend much time at the hotel. I then began to set up my laptop to access my email and discovered there was no high speed internet. I called the front desk and after being transferred several times they informed me that the gift shop “had an internet”, I said “umm, OK”. I figured at this point I may be able to get by with GPRS cell phone access and walked over to my side of the room to grab my phone. The rooms were divided in half with a bed in each partition and a kitchenette in the middle front. Anyway, as I headed over I heard a loud scurrying in the wall. I paused and looked at Rob and he looked at me and said “what?” I asked if he heard that and he replied that he thought I stepped on something. At that moment I realised it had to be a rat in the wall. While I am not sure what the noise was this whole thing was looking worse off by the minute.

Hotels.com, the Travelers St. Christopher

I proceeded to call www.Hotels.com who we originally booked through to explain that we needed a hotel with high speed internet and quiet walls. Keep in mind this was at about two in the morning and they are in Texas. The helpful representative then began calling around to discover that many hotels did not have high speed access to the internet. I found this odd, but maybe I am a bit spoiled living in Seattle. At this point I was willing to settle for a different location, preferably closer to “the strip”. I must have spent about 45 minutes on the call with the representative as he proceeded to call every hotel in Vegas until he found the New York New York, best of all it had the high speed access I requested. I was willing to pay more for a better hotel but was on a budget, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the NY/NY was only $7 more a night. I called my wife to let her know of the change in hotels and we checked out that morning.

More to come......
