Pocket Hack Master for XScale PocketPC Over/Underclocking
Like many others, when I first heard that the next Pocket PC’s would have Intel’s new 400 Mhz X-Scale processor, I couldn’t wait to enjoy all the new found speed all my favorite Pocket PC applications would have. And, like many others, I was very disappointed when I discovered most ran about the same as my old 206 MHz Strong-arm and some even ran slower. All this speed and power in my hand, and I couldn’t tap it.

That is until now.

Anton Tomov developer of Pocket PC Software Pocket Hack Master has allowed me to finally enjoy the full power my 400 Mhz Pocket PC can provide; and then some.

Pocket Hack Master is a very versatile and user friendly program with extreme customization capabilities for advanced users, as well as simple plug and play functionality for those of us not wanting to get to deep into the inner workings of our beloved Pocket PC’s. The author HIGHLY recommends a full backup of your device BEFORE installing or using his software, and I wish to also stress how important this is. I would also like to point out that my device has suffered no ill fate or problems since I installed and began using Pocket Hack Master almost a week ago.

With Pocket Hack Master, you can:






pic • Over clock your device Xscale processor as high as 500 Mhz for improved system performance

• Under clock your device Xscale processor as low as 100 MHz for improved battery life.






• Over clock and under clock your device SDRAM settings.

pic • Map custom clock speeds to user defined processor loads (my favorite). This wonderful feature allows you to adjust, in four steps, what user defined speed your device will run at within a user defined processor load range. This way you’re not burning up extra clock cycles and battery life when you don't need it, but it is instantly available when needed.


• Obtain detailed device information about your CPU, OS, system, and battery or batteries, as well as owner information and any database stored in your machine.

• Like Windows task manager on your host machine, you can access a list of all current processes and threads running on your Pocket PC, with the ability to kill any process.

All of these functions are easily accessible via a small icon that resides in the system tray, using none of your precious Today screen real estate.

The first application I remember being available on the web that was enhanced for use with the Xscale machines was the ever so popular Pocket TV MPEG player. To get the improved speed your Xscale device could provide, you have to buy the Corporate Edition for 50 dollars. I use this program a bit, but not enough to justify this amount for personal use. With Pocket Hack Master, ALL of your application will have access to improved clock speeds and better overall performance.

How much faster?

As an example, one of my favorite MPEGs to show on my iPAQ 3970 using Pocket TV is an older Sony Vaio commercial that is 30 seconds long.		 pic

These results were obtained after a soft reset and only opening the Pocket TV application.

In conclusion, I can easily say of the dozens if not hundreds of application I have used on my Pocket PC’s, this definitely rates in my TOP 5. It should probably be number one, since it allows ALL my application to run faster while prolonging my battery life.

If you are not absolutely sure about changing values manually, you should probably stick with the pre set speeds, as inputting incompatible numbers could result in necessitating a hard reset, or even device damage. My results were obtained using the pre set values supplied in the software.

Pocket Hack Master has definitely breathed new life into my iPAQ and has provided me with more enjoyment and satisfaction while using it for work or play!!!
