Cassiopeia E-15

I know what your thinking, “What do I care about an aging PDA from a year and a half ago,” right? Well, I’d like to start by refreshing us all with a few of the E-15 specifications.

240 x 320, Bright Back-lit, FSTN liquid crystal
16 Level Gray-Scale
69 MHz MIPS R4000 processor
Type I/II (3.3V) CompactFlash Slot
Microphone
Earphone Jack
Weighs only 6.5 ounces and is a mere 0.6 inches thick

Sure sure, the E-15 may seem to be old tech compared to today’s color palmtops with 206 MHz StrongArm Processors, but it’s really one of the first palmtops I used that satisfied a lot of my portable needs such as the ability to synchronize my MS Outlook, read web pages offline, play MP3’s, and play games. Casio really refined the Cassiopeia line by reducing its size, adding a great software bundle and including a headphone jack, albeit only mono.

It’s easy to spend up to $500 on a palmtop today, but a lot of people don’t have that kind of money to spend on a portable device they may not use as frequently as their PC. This is where the Cassiopeia E-15 comes in. The E-15 runs the WindowsCE 2.11 OS and Microsoft has finally released an MP3 player for the 2.11 version of WinCE. What we have here is a sleek lightweight PDA that you can add CompactFlash memory to that will play all your MP3’s while your reading your email or web news from AvantGo or MovilGo, for about what you would pay for a Palm M100.

You have to do a little searching for these as they are not manufactured anymore, but I’ve seen them on EBay, Anandtech’s BBS, and on the local Circuit City’s clearance shelf. At these secondhand or clearance prices, the E-15 makes a great portable tool or gift for someone who wants a PDA that will do a lot of things only the more expensive PDA’s will do and the less expense Palms won’t do.
