Proporta 3-in-1 Stylus for Zire 71

If you read my review of the Zire 71, you know that one of the only serious gripes I had about it is that it comes with only one, cheap plastic stylus. Unline the Vx, which came with two styli, one of which was metal with a screw-off top which had a pin for reset the Palm, the default Zire stylus has no such advantage, sending you scurrying for a paper clip if you find you need to reset.

Enter Proporta with the stylus that you should have gotten. It is a very nice stylus with an aluminum barrel and fits in the little stylus silo in the Zire (which will be empty as soon as you ditch that nasty plastic thing). The Proporta stylus feels solid and has enough weight to it you’re much less likely to drop it without even realizing it’s gone. Like the lamented Vx stylus, it has the reset pin under the screw-off top. But Proporta has gone one further – under a snap-off tip there’s a ballpoint pen. I’m not sure you can get a refill for the pen; I wasn’t able to figure out how you would get it out to refill it, but that wouldn’t be a major objection for me. I find I only use it as an emergency pen when I can’t find another, so it will probably outlast the Palm itself. But it’s sure been nice to have those few times when someone wanted to jot some info on a business card and neither one of us had a pen in our pocket.

I wouldn’t have thought a nice stylus would make this much difference in my satisfaction with the Zire, but it really does. I’d recommend one of these gems for anyone who owns a Zire. I hope Palm takes note and includes something of this quality with the next Palm I get.
