Targus WiFi Scanner
The Targus WiFi Scanner is the second generation of WiFi locator from Targus. Small and lightweight (2.16"x1.1"x2.46” and 2.05 oz.), it is simple to use and easy to keep in your pocket. With its single line, 12 character LCD display, it can provide SSID, WiFi Channel, signal strength, and WEP status for multiple access points within its range. Simple push the white button and after scanning the area, the WiFi Scanner will display one of the identified access points. Press the button again to see the next access point. The Targus WiFi Scanner has a range of up to 60 feet indoors and 200 feet outdoors. It can scan all 13 WiFi channels in the 2.4 GHz band and is compatible to 802.11b/g with the ability to filter out non 802.11b/g signals. With its low battery indicator and automatic shutoff, it is extremely easy to use while also being reliable due to its filters for eliminating false signals. The WiFi Scanner comes with 2 AAA batteries and a user guide. The keychain loop allows for easily carrying it at all times with your keys. With the wide range of available free access points, such as airports, libraries, coffee shops, and other businesses, the ability to quickly identify an access point and signal strength makes using your WiFi device easy and convenient. If you use one of the many subscription WiFi or Broadband access services, the WiFi Scanner allows you to maximize the value of your charge-for-service account. With all the new laws concerning wireless access, it is now illegal in many states to make use of a non-secured access point if you do not have the permission of the access point owner. So be careful not to use the WiFi Scanner to find free internet access on a private network, unless it is a free-service access point offered to the public. While the Targus WiFi Scanner has advanced filtering, LCD display, multiple access point identification, and good range / sensitivity, it is a little expensive. While there are other products that are much less expensive, they do not have the capabilities of the Targus WiFi Scanner. Many competitive products can only identify a single access point and cannot give SSID and WEP information. So if you want a WiFi locator that does everything in a small, easy to carry package, check out the Targus WiFi Scanner. Pros Cons Reviewed by Harvey Lee
