Good Technology and Wireless Industry Leaders Demonstrate the Future of Wireless Handheld Computing
Posted by Bill Landon in General_PDA | (0) Comments |

Industry leaders in enterprise software, handheld computing hardware, and telecommunications today joined wireless enterprise customers and Good Technology at a Wireless Summit in San Francisco, CA., to usher in the next phase of evolution in enterprise mobility, beyond wireless email. Hewlett Packard, Esurance, Kyphon, Oracle, salesforce.com, Siebel, Symbol, Visa and others announced today that they are partnering with Good Technology to extend mission-critical applications and data, including CRM, ERP, SCM, BI and PIM applications, to mobile professionals—at the point-of-business. Good Technology will Webcast the Summit today at 11:00 a.m. Pacific Time/2:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The live and recorded Webcast can be accessed at http://www.good.com/webcast/ .

“In 2005, our primary wireless requirement is to arm our mobile workforce with the applications they need where and when they need them the most,” said Marj Davies, director of Internet Operations at Esurance. “Every mobile worker needs access to email. However, it’s also about giving executives access to mission critical business reports, claims adjustors access to our claims system, and our IT organization access to helpdesk applications. It’s critical that we do this cost effectively, securely and with minimal strain to our IT organization. Good Technology’s approach to wireless handheld computing gives us the flexibility and reliability we need. We chose Good because it enables us to deliver email and other applications on the devices and carriers that work best for our users. No other vendor gives us that kind of flexibility and extensibility today.”

IsoSpace, a provider of Internet-based communications systems, has released a version of its collaboration software for Web-enabled Pocket PCs. Named IsoConnect, the software complements the standard version of IsoSpace by providing a simple way to participate in IsoSpace meetings wirelessly.

On2 Technologies Announces Ports To Pocket PC and MS Smartphone
Posted by Bill Landon in Windows_Mobile_News | (0) Comments |

On2 Technologies, Inc., The Duck Corporation, today announced that it has ported its VP6.2 video decoder software and Truecast Player to Windows mobile-based Pocket PC and Smartphone devices.

The company said its ability of showing high-quality video at very low data rates well under 100 kbps on these mobile devices is critical to pursuing the handheld PC and cellphone markets. The company also said that it has begun demonstrating VP6.2 on these devices to both existing and potential customers.

“The newer VPx codecs, which now include VP7, will allow commercially viable video to play on devices that have extremely inexpensive processors, limited memory and battery capacity,” said Eric Ameres, On2’s Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. “Using On2’s technology, programming can be moved to these platforms at a quality level that we believe makes them good targets for the content industry,” he added.

Harris Corporation Selected for $37 Million Spaceborne Antenna Program for Mobile User Objective Sys
Posted by Bill Landon in Science | (0) Comments |

image Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) , the world leader in spaceborne unfurlable mesh reflectors, today announced that it has been selected by Lockheed Martin Space and Strategic Missiles, Sunnyvale, California, for a potential three-year, $37 million risk reduction design development (RRDD) program to provide unfurlable mesh reflectors for Department of Defense (DoD) Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellites. MUOS is a next-generation, mobile communications system that will provide narrowband, tactical satellite communications to deployed warfighters. Including production options, the potential value of the contract for Harris could reach $90 million by 2013 if the DoD opts to produce all five satellites.

Under terms of the contract, Harris is providing Lockheed Martin with spaceborne unfurlable mesh reflector technology for the MUOS program. The reflectors, two per satellite, will be manufactured at Harris facilities in Palm Bay, Florida, as part of the MUOS geo-synchronous satellite’s ultra high- frequency (UHF)-band antenna system. The 5- and 12-meter reflectors, attached to the satellite bus by booms, include gold mesh reflective surfaces and are stowed for launch much like an umbrella. Once the MUOS satellite achieves operational orbit 22,000 miles above earth, ground controllers will send a command signal to the satellite to unfurl the reflectors.

New Wireless Weight-Loss Tools Fit in the Palm of Your Hand
Posted by Bill Landon in General_PDA | (0) Comments |

image Talking on a cell phone may be considered rude in most restaurants, but tapping on a handheld device is perfectly acceptable—encouraged, even, by people watching their weight.

Handheld devices do much more these days than keep schedules and store phone numbers. Many people trying to slim down use their handhelds or PDAs to track the food they eat and the exercise they perform. The biggest names in weight-loss are offering mobile versions of their plans that people can take with them wherever they go.

“We like to think of our new mobile product as a global positioning system for weight management,” said Scott Parlee, director of product development for WeightWatchers.com. “Our customers told us they want tools to help them stay on course when they’re at a restaurant, the grocery store, or the gym, so we found a way to put our weight-loss tools in the palm of your hand.”

Weight Watchers(R) On-the-Go(TM) for handheld devices works in conjunction with a WeightWatchers.com account. You can follow Weight Watchers online and add the mobile product to the cost of your monthly subscription.

iMATE JAM 128MB Upgrade Reviewed @ HowardForums
Posted by Bill Landon in Windows_Mobile_News | (0) Comments |

imageHere’s a review of PocketPCTechs iMATE 64MB to 128MB Internal RAM upgrade done by Mark Morrow and posted on HowardForums.  It is very well done and thorough.  They also took some photos of the process which can help in explaining why the upgrade costs what it does and why it is not user installable.

You’ll notice the old chips laying upside down, next to the PCBA.  These are Ball Grid Array (BGA) chips which instead of having metal leads coming out the side of the chip that you solder onto the motherboard, there are little solder balls that are underneath the chip. We use specialized equipment to align and then reflow the chips onto the motherboard.  Definitely not something for the end-user to do.

Build Your Own Rotary-Dial Cell Phone
Posted by Bill Landon in General_PDA | (0) Comments |

I saw this on http://www.slashdot.com and figured the PDAToday crowd would like it:

“Yes, you read it right. Port-O-Rotary. We’ve gone and hacked into a rotary phone.

I find myself talking about nerd things with my friends and peers who could usually careless. Every once and a while, someone who really doesn’t have a clue, says something so crazy, it makes you take a step back. I can’t remember who had the idea of a rotary cell phone - needless to say it had something to do with quite a few rum and cokes. They didn’t have a clue how to do it, they just thought it would be cool. So did I…

Why wouldn’t it be cool to see a rotary phone, ringing, with no wires attached? It might mess with your brain a bit.”

How Speakers Radiate Sound: Why Wall Units are the Enemy?

Large wall units or entertainment centers are sensible solutions to house an A/V receiver, DVD player and other gear as well as the TV display. But putting tower speakers inside the wall unit will degrade and compromise neutral and transparent sound.
