MP3beamer Makes Personal Music Catalog Available From Any Device

Consumer Electronic News

MP3tunes, a new San Diego-based music company, today introduced a new music appliance called MP3beamer, which organizes an entire music collection in one convenient location and then makes the music accessible from almost any device or location. Users can quickly store their CD collection and MP3 libraries and then organize the music and construct custom playlists. Once stored to MP3beamer, the music is universally accessible from computers, home stereos, PDAs, and portable devices including iTunes software and iPod players via iTunes. MP3beamer is available for immediate purchase in a $399 hardware version or a $69.95 software version at www.mp3beamer.com

"The MP3beamer is the jukebox in the sky, but it lives in your computer room," said Michael Robertson, CEO of MP3tunes. "It acts like your own personal digital music recorder [DMR]. Just as a digital video recorder stores video and allows you to play it back on TVs, a DMR lets you add a music track or album to MP3beamer and immediately have it available on your home stereo, iTunes, PDA or portable device -- virtually any device with speakers or a headphone jack."

MP3beamer makes it easy to combine computer files and CDs into an organized library. CDs can be added by simply inserting them into the CD-ROM drive without additional user interaction. It takes three to four minutes to rip a CD, including automatic detection of artist, album and track titles. Tracks are recorded in MP3 format at high-quality 192kbps. Once it is completed saving, the CD is auto-ejected, making the MP3beamer ready to rip another CD. Individual MP3s can be copied to MP3beamer over the Internet or be transported via USB devices for import into a music library. Tracks purchased from online music retailers such as MP3tunes and emusic can also be loaded into MP3beamer. Once music is stored, songs can be sorted by genre, artist, and album, and users can construct their own personalized playlists. More...

Remote Access to patient notes is the ideal solution for healthcare professionals in their quest to provide better, more efficient, and more informed quality care to the patients. Turn Your Windows Mobile Smartphone Into an Outdoor Atlas

Windows Mobile News

image Some of us plan our outdoor escapes while others like to wing it without much preparation. In both cases, having a detailed map or chart is a big advantage -- both for navigation and safety. Now, individuals can have maps on their cell phones. Maptech's Outdoor Navigator for Windows Mobile Smartphone ( http://www.outdoornavigator.com/ ) has more than 60,000 off-road maps and boating charts for $19.95.

Benefits:

Better safety: Maybe you're like Daniel Boone, who once claimed, "I was never lost, but I was bewildered once for three days." Mark Jadkowski, VP of Business Development, says, "That line gets laughs every time, but talk to someone who got lost, even if it was for just an hour or two, and you will see just how unnerving it really is. With Outdoor Navigator on a Smartphone you not only have the right maps and charts to know where you are, but, if needed, you can now call and tell your location."

Great value: Most serious and experienced outdoor adventurers know the value of taking the right off-road maps with them. But this is not always convenient and can be costly. The recognized standards for off-road adventure are USGS topos. But a single map can cost $4 to $6. With Outdoor Navigator you get thousands of these same maps for your Smartphone for $20. Paper nautical charts sell for around $20 each and Outdoor Navigator has 2,300 of them. More...

1GB Lexar High-Speed 32X SD Memory Card Review @ The Tech Zone

Consumer Electronic News

The Tech Zone reviews a 1GB Lexar High-Speed 32X SD Memory Card.

"If you recently purchased a digital camera, chances are the memory card that came with the digicam was of low capacity, perhaps 16 or 32 megabytes. You will no doubt discover this is simply not enough memory to do any serious shooting. With many of the compact, point-and-shoot digital cameras rated at resolutions of 4 or 5 megapixels, the highest quality settings will quickly consume that memory and store only a handful of pictures. Without a doubt, the first accessory you should buy for your new camera is a higher capacity memory card."

How to Judge Loudspeaker Sound and Accuracy

Consumer Electronic News

"If we are being true to the goal of seeking higher fidelity, then an ideal loudspeaker should have no "sound" at all. In other words, it should be completely transparent, an open door to the musical performance. An accurate speaker's role is to replicate--precisely--the sounds of musical instruments or voices exactly as they were present in the original source recording. The speaker shouldn't add any sound of its own--it shouldn't make strings and violins sound screechy or edgy, nor should it artificially add bass emphasis to male singers' voices so they sound too bassy or "fat" (a common fault of many speakers). Toshiba And Sandisk Develop 8-Gigabit Nand Flash Memory Chip With 70nm Process Technology

Consumer Electronic News

Toshiba Corporation and SanDisk® Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) today announced an 8-gigabit (Gb) NAND flash memory chip fabricated with 70-nanometer (nm) process technology that ushers in the new era of gigabyte chips: 1-gigabyte data storage capacity on a single chip. The new chip was today reported at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) 2005 in San Francisco.

The new NAND flash memory utilizes multi-level cell (MLC) technology that allows two bits of data to be stored in one memory cell, doubling memory capacity. Innovative circuit design techniques were utilized to improve chip area efficiency resulting in an 8Gb chip size that is less than 5 percent larger than the previous generation 4Gb chip on 90 nanometer. At 146 square millimeters, the 8Gb chip has an areal density of 6 billion bits or 3 billion transistors per square centimeter (20 billion transistors per square inch of silicon).

Performance is maximized by adoption of fast writing circuit techniques, which reduce data write times and support a fast write speed of 6-megabytes per second. Read speed of 60MB/sec., which is 40% faster than previous generation, has been achieved by a combination of burst mode and high read bandwidth. More...

Mio Mitac 168 (also known as Yakumo 300 and Navman PiN) is still in the lead on the Krusell Top list for January 2005 as the most sold PDA case globally. We never expected the demand on a single unit would be this high, says Ulf Sandberg Marketing Director at Krusell. Not so surprisingly the new hot models from Qtek has both taken a top-3 position. They are even more popular than the HP models at this point.

-We have forecasted a continued rapid growth on our volumes of PDA-cases, since we see no sign of decreased demand after the Christmas period. It just keeps on growing Ulf Sandberg ends with a smile.

Mobile Phones

Commute time just got a lot more productive on five ferries thanks to collaboration between Mobilisa, Inc. and Washington State Ferries. Free wireless Internet will be available on the heavily traveled Bainbridge Island-Seattle route February 4, 2005, with Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash) tentatively scheduled to participate in the "cable cutting" kick-off on the 10:40 a.m. trip.

"This is the third ferry run to get Wi-Fi," said Jim Long, WSF Information Technology Director. "The Port Townsend-Keystone route was launched last summer and the Kingston-Edmonds in December. We're pleased to offer this service to our passengers, as we think it really improves the customer experience."

The service will remain free until the end of April at which time a private operator may take over the service. Passengers on the three routes are now able to surf the Internet, check their e-mail and access Web information at speeds many times faster than a dial up connection.

Mobilisa and Washington State Ferries were identified in a research grant sponsored by Senator Murray and managed by the Federal Department of Transportation to determine the feasibility of wireless Internet on board ferry routes in Puget Sound. More...

Hitachi FLORA-ie MX1: Pocket PC Powerhouse

Windows Mobile News

image Gizmodo has the scoop on the Hitachi FLORA...a phrase from Batman come to mind..."where does he get all those wonderful toys?" Ya gota love those guys...

Hitachi has announced a new Japanese PDA called the FLORA-ie MX1, a 400MHz Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 2003SE. The most stand-out feature of the MX1 is definitely the Zaurus-like slide-out keyboard which is certain to make it lusted after by many Western Pocket PC fans, who have been privy to integrated keyboards before, but nothing quite the same. As a big fan of the Zaurus form factor (and less so the Linux environment it runs) I'd say it's a pretty appealing design. I hope Hitachi considers bringing it to the US.

What? Don’t look surprised, we didn’t really think Gates was going to make it happen at CES, though there was some speculation he was going to drop the curtain at the Game Developers Conference next month."

PatientKeeper Selected by GE Healthcare to Bring Advanced Mobile Healthcare Solutions to Physicians

General PDA

I really thought Tablet PC would be the device of choice but it starting to look like PDA based systems are getting the spotlight in vertical markets like healthcare. I think the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) may have something to with that. It’s far cheaper to deploy a raft of PDA’s in a doctors office at $500ish a piece as opposed to $2000 per Tablet PC, then there is the size issue, the PDA is just easier to wield and has superior battery life.

PatientKeeper(R) today announced that GE Healthcare has selected its mobile software technology. GE Healthcare will market and sell PatientKeeper software as Centricity(R) Physician Office Mobile(TM). PatientKeeper, a leading provider of mobile software solutions for healthcare, and GE Healthcare have partnered to offer tightly integrated mobile applications that will enable physicians to simultaneously view the patient's electronic medical record, use powerful clinical decision support tools, accurately record charges for medical treatments, and more -- all with one mobile device. Centricity Mobile, which will be unveiled and demonstrated at the 2005 HIMSS Conference, February 13-17, Dallas, TX, will initially include charge capture, with other popular PatientKeeper applications being added over time. The new offering will be available to both new and existing customers.

"As the demands on medical office staff continue to escalate, Centricity Mobile provides the efficiency, workflow and productivity to allow providers to focus more on the patient while still enhancing their revenue," said David Henriksen, general manager of GE Healthcare's Centricity Physician Office.

Physicians own more technology (e.g., PDAs and smartphones) and go online more often than do other consumers. According to a North American Benchmark Study by Forrester Research, physicians are five times as likely to carry a personal digital assistant, such as a Palm OS or PocketPC device, than are typical consumers. Gartner, Inc. estimates that one in two doctors use PDAs. More...

The software, with "Intellisync Inside", was fully deployed just four days after it was purchased.

The technology behind it all -- Intellisync(R) Mobile Suite(TM) -- now enables hospital and field-service personnel to use Symbol handheld devices to track linen quantities and usage, calculate restocking levels and print receipts -- accurately, reliably and securely. More...
