The Next Wave of Distributive Audio Sounds Off with 802.11-Enabled Speakers

Consumer Electronic News

As home networks rapidly evolve support for the distribution of stored digital and online media content to the home entertainment center, 802.11-enabled speaker solutions will find a natural fit in many media networks. According to The Diffusion Group, a Dallas-based market research consultancy, approximately one-third of current home network owners are, to varying degrees and averaged across several price points, interested in purchasing 802.11-enabled speakers.

The report entitled Next Generation Distributive Audio: Consumer Interest in 802.11-enabled Speakers illustrates the characteristics of the prime target consumer group for such speaker solutions. "Though the market is, by definition, limited by the adoption of home networks," says TDG analyst, Dale Gilliam III, "there is a lot of early interest in wirelessly-networked speakers. And naturally so, because as computers operating with Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition are replacing many CE devices in the home theater, wirelessly networked speakers offer a convenient solution for replacing the speakers formerly connected to the home stereo."

The report also found:

Among home network owners and those intending to soon purchase a home network, 53% are, to varying degrees, interested in purchasing 802.11-enabled speakers if the price is below $100; 45% are interested if the price is between $100 and $150.

Approximately 60% of the primary consumer segment for 802.11-enabled speakers is comfortable using a PC as the center of their home entertainment center.

When averaged across the various price points, 44% of Internet households already distributing media over their home network are interested in purchasing 802.11-enabled speakers. More...

Multiple Vulnerabilities in Pocket IE: Pocket IE Attack Overview

Windows Mobile News

Pocket IE Attack Overview

There are several weaknesses in Pocket IE that can be used to trick end users into submitting local and/or sensitive data, such as usernames and passwords. The potential for exploiting these vulnerabilities are restricted only by an attackers imagination. However, Pocket IE is not
as powerful as its big brother, and as such, an attacker is limited in what techniques she can use to launch the attack. For example, Pocket IE has no support for the IFrame tag, which is extremely useful in XSS and browser-based attacks. In addition, Pocket IE does not support every JavaScript command commonly used by attackers. The final example presented is an attempt to combine these individual flaws into one attack and is only meant to serve as a proof of concept.

100-Year-Old School on Technology Fast Track; Illinois Institution Plans Schoolwide Use of palmOne Handhelds

PalmOne News

Avery Coonley School may be nearly 100 years old, but when it comes to endowing its teachers and students with handheld technology for the classroom, this private, independent school in Downers Grove, Ill., is one of the most forward-looking schools in the state.

After the rousing success of a fourth-grade pilot program last year, each student and teacher in grades four through eight now have their own Zire(TM) 72 handheld, as well as a wireless keyboard, from palmOne, Inc. (NASDAQ:PLMO) . It's the realization of the school's vision to provide a learning device for every student, and one that has earned full support and cooperation from students, teachers and parents.

"The pilot program gave us a chance to discover the possibilities that handhelds bring to teaching, learning and other aspects of school life," said Joe Janojak, technology director at Avery Coonley. "Once we articulated our vision, parents embraced the idea and were instrumental in helping us raise the funds. They see the benefits."

According to Jennifer Garetto and Laura Bojkovski, the fourth-grade teachers who ran the pilot program, the benefits are obvious -- students are more enthusiastic and motivated. They also require very little instruction. Within a few days they are scheduling appointments, writing memos, writing lists to keep themselves on task, filling in the calendar with homework assignments and due dates, and even setting the alarm to remind themselves of a deadline. But the benefits go beyond organization. More...

Elegant Writing/Stylus Combos from StylusCentral.com Reviewed By Kickstartnews

General PDA

Kickstartnews has published reviews of the Cross Morph DigitalWriter Duo Stylus/Pen and the Rotring Stylus/Pen, both available from StylusCentral.com.

The Morph DigitalWriter Duo includes both a ballpoint pen and PDA stylus. Its ergonomic design and adjustable grip provides a comfortable writing instrument and offers a sophisticated look and feel.

Howard Carson, Kickstartnews product reviewer commented, “The chromed aluminum, steel, nylon and composite construction is lightweight and strong. The morphing grip appears to be extremely tough, very difficult to damage, yet amazingly soft in the hand, providing an absolutely sure grip in all conditions including sub-zero weather, extreme heat and humidity.”

The Rotring is an elegant writing/stylus tool that can be used for extended periods of time as it is extremely durable and well designed. It writes smoothly on a variety of paper types and the stylus tip's bright color improves tapping accuracy.

"I used the Rotring Trio Stylus/Pen throughout the late December 2004 holidays to address a number of issues, clean out my PDA databases (deleting, entering, correcting), and to plow through a pile of editing in several contracts using Documents To Go," Carson said. "What I was hoping for throughout the extended experiment was to find the perfect stylus/pen combination and I think I came close."

As each word is formed, the tiles in the word are removed and the remaining tiles fall into the vacated spaces and create new word possibilities.

A strategic approach to the game is essential to winning. Players need to plan ahead in order to clear the board and move on to the next round. To increase the number of word possibilities, players can also rotate the board to rearrange the letters. More...

Annual Shipments of Internet-Enabled Hybrid Set-Top Boxes to Reach 17 Million by 2010

Consumer Electronic News

Given that the cross-over point between MPEG-2 video transmission bandwidths and sustained broadband access bandwidths in volume deployments has now been reached, The Diffusion Group, a technology research think-tank, projects that by 2010, two-thirds of the global IPTV service market will be enabled by "hybrid" set-top boxes, equipment that supports both legacy TV services such as cable and satellite, as well as IP-based services.

"The power of IP as a digital video transport technology will rapidly expand beyond telco-TV operators to affect multiple network topologies," says Herve Utheza, consulting analyst with The Diffusion Group. "Even though the telco-TV market now enjoys decent media and press attention, implementations of IPTV by digital satellite (DBS), digital terrestrial (DTT) and cable operators will probably dominate in the medium to long-term future."

As these implementations take hold, the types of equipment used at the consumer premise will also shift from single network (that is, a device that supports only satellite, cable, or DTT) to multiple network or hybrid solutions. Windows Mobile News

On2 Technologies, Inc., The Duck Corporation, today announced that it has ported its VP6.2 video decoder software and Truecast Player to Windows mobile-based Pocket PC and Smartphone devices.

The company said its ability of showing high-quality video at very low data rates well under 100 kbps on these mobile devices is critical to pursuing the handheld PC and cellphone markets. The company also said that it has begun demonstrating VP6.2 on these devices to both existing and potential customers.

"The newer VPx codecs, which now include VP7, will allow commercially viable video to play on devices that have extremely inexpensive processors, limited memory and battery capacity," said Eric Ameres, On2's Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. "Using On2's technology, programming can be moved to these platforms at a quality level that we believe makes them good targets for the content industry," he added. More...

Harris Corporation Selected for $37 Million Spaceborne Antenna Program for Mobile User Objective System Satellites

Science

image Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) , the world leader in spaceborne unfurlable mesh reflectors, today announced that it has been selected by Lockheed Martin Space and Strategic Missiles, Sunnyvale, California, for a potential three-year, $37 million risk reduction design development (RRDD) program to provide unfurlable mesh reflectors for Department of Defense (DoD) Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellites. MUOS is a next-generation, mobile communications system that will provide narrowband, tactical satellite communications to deployed warfighters. Including production options, the potential value of the contract for Harris could reach $90 million by 2013 if the DoD opts to produce all five satellites.

Under terms of the contract, Harris is providing Lockheed Martin with spaceborne unfurlable mesh reflector technology for the MUOS program. The reflectors, two per satellite, will be manufactured at Harris facilities in Palm Bay, Florida, as part of the MUOS geo-synchronous satellite's ultra high- frequency (UHF)-band antenna system. The 5- and 12-meter reflectors, attached to the satellite bus by booms, include gold mesh reflective surfaces and are stowed for launch much like an umbrella. Once the MUOS satellite achieves operational orbit 22,000 miles above earth, ground controllers will send a command signal to the satellite to unfurl the reflectors. More...

New Wireless Weight-Loss Tools Fit in the Palm of Your Hand

General PDA

image Talking on a cell phone may be considered rude in most restaurants, but tapping on a handheld device is perfectly acceptable -- encouraged, even, by people watching their weight.

Handheld devices do much more these days than keep schedules and store phone numbers. Many people trying to slim down use their handhelds or PDAs to track the food they eat and the exercise they perform. The biggest names in weight-loss are offering mobile versions of their plans that people can take with them wherever they go.

"We like to think of our new mobile product as a global positioning system for weight management," said Scott Parlee, director of product development for WeightWatchers.com. "Our customers told us they want tools to help them stay on course when they're at a restaurant, the grocery store, or the gym, so we found a way to put our weight-loss tools in the palm of your hand."

Weight Watchers(R) On-the-Go(TM) for handheld devices works in conjunction with a WeightWatchers.com account. You can follow Weight Watchers online and add the mobile product to the cost of your monthly subscription. More...

iMATE JAM 128MB Upgrade Reviewed @ HowardForums

Windows Mobile News

imageHere's a review of PocketPCTechs iMATE 64MB to 128MB Internal RAM upgrade done by Mark Morrow and posted on HowardForums. It is very well done and thorough. They also took some photos of the process which can help in explaining why the upgrade costs what it does and why it is not user installable.

You'll notice the old chips laying upside down, next to the PCBA. These are Ball Grid Array (BGA) chips which instead of having metal leads coming out the side of the chip that you solder onto the motherboard, there are little solder balls that are underneath the chip. We use specialized equipment to align and then reflow the chips onto the motherboard. Definitely not something for the end-user to do.

Build Your Own Rotary-Dial Cell Phone

General PDA

I saw this on www.slashdot.com and figured the PDAToday crowd would like it:

"Yes, you read it right. Port-O-Rotary. We've gone and hacked into a rotary phone.

I find myself talking about nerd things with my friends and peers who could usually careless. Every once and a while, someone who really doesn't have a clue, says something so crazy, it makes you take a step back. I can't remember who had the idea of a rotary cell phone - needless to say it had something to do with quite a few rum and cokes. They didn't have a clue how to do it, they just thought it would be cool. So did I...

Why wouldn't it be cool to see a rotary phone, ringing, with no wires attached? It might mess with your brain a bit."

Digital Space Theatre in New Beijing Planetarium Powered by SGI and Zeiss Provides Immersive, Hands-On Window to the Universe

Science

image For an experience that's truly out of this world, visitors to the 2008 Summer Games will need to go no further than the new Beijing Planetarium. The world's first digital all-dome laser-projected real-time planetarium is powered by a Zeiss All Dome Laser Image Projection system driven by SGI(R) Onyx(R) visualization computers. In the newly opened SGI(R) Digital Space Theatre, visitors will -- for the first time -- see spectacular high-contrast color images including more than 37,000 stars, 30,000 galaxies, constellations, nebulae, planets, spacecraft, and deep space objects.

Since its founding in 1957, the Beijing Planetarium has played a national role in Chinese astronomical education resulting in many textbooks, audiovisual aids and scientific works. In 2002, after intense reviews, the Beijing Planetarium contracted Silicon Graphics (NYSE:SGI) to build a digital planetarium solution that would represent a paradigm shift in how planetariums can become destination spots to educate and entertain visitors.

Located behind the old planetarium, the brand-new dazzling glass building is 30 meters high, occupying 20 thousand square meters, and has three theaters and two observatories. Arriving on the second floor by escalator, visitors can see the 200-seat SGI Digital Space Theatre with its 18-meter dome, tilted 15 degrees.

The dome is powered by a 24-processor SGI Onyx visualization system with 12GB RAM and six SGI(R) InfiniteReality4(TM) graphic pipes, each with 1GB of dedicated texture memory. An additional 3-pipe Onyx system with InfiniteReality3(TM) graphics is installed in the dome for show development and pre-show presentations. SGI also provided 580GB of SGI(R) InfiniteStorage TP9100 and TP900 systems, enough to run two playback and two real-time shows. More...

802.11n IC Shipments to Top 90 Million Worldwide by 2007

Mobile Phones

A new report from consumer technology think-tank, The Diffusion Group, suggests that UWB will face tough obstacles on the way to widespread market penetration. UWB versus 802.11n ICs: Competitive Analysis & Forecasts, the group's latest report, predicts that 802.11n integrated circuits will leverage the pattern established by its WiFi-based predecessors, something new wireless solutions such as UWB do not have: (1) rapid standards adoption with interoperability assurance control, and (2) backwards compatibility that also serves to accelerate the replacement cycle of the installed base of 802.11n predecessors.

"The window of market entry for new wireless technologies is closing rapidly," says Dr. Predrag Filipovic, consulting analyst with The Diffusion Group. "While UWB may offer greater throughput than today's 802.11x solutions, new consumer multimedia systems will require longer ranges than UWB's 10-foot promise. Moreover, the next generation of 802.11 (802.11n) has plenty of ammunition - 100 Mbps or more - to address bandwidth intensive multimedia applications across greater distances." More...
