Dual Processor Win CE Powered Radio Controller Released

Windows Mobile News

image The 14MZ takes advantage of two separate internal processors for maximum efficiency and reliability. A custom Futaba processor expertly directs all functions dedicated to flight control. Input for general operating tasks — such as set-up and programming — is processed by Windows CE. Double the resolution of PCM 1024, the 14MZ's breakthrough PCM G3 2048 enables servos to pick up even the slightest stick movements. It's enhanced by a frame rate that's 40% faster than Futaba's 9Z — much more data transmits in a much shorter time. The result? Real-Time Response…response so good, it feels like it's happening in real time! HVGA screen features crystal-clear 640x240 pixel resolution.

Jonathon Watkins of PocketPCThoughts.com says:

"Real-Time responses that feel like they are happening in real time? Impressive. You want features? The 14MZ supports 14 channels, 7 different wing types, 4 tail types, 3 motor types and 7 heli swash types, can handle up to 32 selectable functions and 9 flight conditions, can play music and voice commands can be assigned to switches, e.g., "flaps up". There's a brief review in Fly RC magazine and they reckon it's more than just a tool to connects a pilot to an airplane; it is a multi-media system that facilitates the flying experience. So there you go. Do any of you guys do any Remote Controlled flying and is this the kind of kit you can conceive yourself coveting?"

Digital Camera Media Safe In Carry-on And Checked Baggage, New Tests Show

Consumer Electronic News

Recent tests found no evidence of X-ray scanner damage to digital camera media cards or to the images they hold. The tests of scanner models currently in use in the U.S. transportation industry were jointly conducted by the International Imaging Industry Association (I3A), the leading global association for the imaging industry; SanDisk® Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK), a manufacturer of digital media cards; and the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

These findings mean that digital cameras and their image storage media can travel safely in either checked or carry-on bags, which will be reassuring to holiday travelers. And though they were not explicitly tested, it is likely that images on camera-phones will be safe in either situation as well. More care is needed for cameras with film, however, as the X-ray scanners for both checked and carry-on luggage can fog both developed and undeveloped film.

"Our tests should put travelers' fears to rest, that their digitally captured holiday memories won't be damaged in transit," said Lisa Walker, I3A President. "Digital cameras and media can safely go in carry-ons without the need for hand-inspection, which will simplify security checks and make those long lines move a little faster." More...

CEA Survey Gives Insight Into Generation Tech

Consumer Electronic News

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) today announced the release of a new market research survey on teen consumer electronics (CE) consumers. The survey found that teens are not only interested in CE products, but American teenagers are heavy, regular users of CE products.

Nearly all teens in this phone survey, 98 percent, said they watched a TV in the past 30 days, 91 percent used a DVD player, 87 percent used a desktop computer and 86 percent used a VCR. Substantial majorities also reported using wireless phones, videogame consoles and computer-based CD burner/writers over the last month.

“From their earliest days, this generation was exposed to CE products,” said CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. “Today’s teens truly are Generation TECH. The comScore research studied the buying activity of Internet users who conducted a consumer electronics or computer (CE/C) search at one of the top 25 search engines in Q1 2004. Among the other findings, the study revealed that 25 percent of searchers ultimately purchased a CE/C product and that an estimated 92 percent of these purchases occurred offline. Is Verizon Technology Leadership stranding the Small Business Client

Mobile Phones

We recently applauded Verizon (Verizon Wireless Offers palmOne's Treo 600 smartphone With Always-on Wireless Sync, Palm News, July 19, 2004) for their marriage of Palm Treo 600 Technology with Intellisync “always-on” technology to become the only carrier to offer an integrated e-mail solution on the Treo 600 smartphone so that e-mails sent to a customer's PC will be immediately sent to their Treo 600. We noted that The Treo 600 is an ideal device for business executives, seamlessly combining a full-featured mobile phone and a Palm OS(R) organizer with wireless data applications in one compact, powerful device. Recent feedback to that review indicates that a consequence of this move by Verizon is the impact on Verizon’s significant subscriber base comprised of small business users and non-executives. Reports are that these subscribers who would love to upgrade to the Treo platform primarily for the originally intended benefits of the cell phone and PDA combination, must contract with Verizon for their unlimited internet access package in order to use the equipment.

Our understanding is that the marriage of the Treo with Intellisync to provide the always-on capability is a one way-street in that Verizon does not allow the combined technology to be disengaged. The consequence is that a Treo user on Verizion is indeed “always-on” the internet, even if they would prefer not to be. This always-on capability will consume their air-time minutes unless they choose to subscribe to Verizon’s unlimited data package. This internet access, Wireless Sync consumes standard air-time minutes, unless the user subscribes to Verizon’s unlimited internet access package (approx $45/month). Without this package, users potentially incur monthly costs in excess of $1000 for air-time. In their defense, it seems that Verizon may not even be fully up to speed on this issue. Visits to their stores and multiple calls to their customer service and technology departments resulted in varying responses regarding the requirement to subscribe to the data pack or knowledge about the impact of the WirelessSync Capability.

Verizon was slow to offer Treo technology compared to other wireless providers, and only then under considerable pressure from their subscriber base. Considering the delay that Verizon subscribers suffered in waiting for this technology, it is additionally painful now to find out that the equipment is not a economically viable option for the type of user for which the TREO was intended. While we continue to applaud Verizon for their ingenuity in creating the always-on capability around the TREO platform, we wonder at what costs this comes if popular technology such as the Treo is removed from the hands of a large segment of Verizon’s subscribers. We would like to see Verizon make the Treo available with Wireless Sync as an optional as opposed to a standard feature.

Today’s counter commentary was sent in by Charlie Maclay. Thanks Charlie for pointing out some very valid arguments, let see what Verizon has to say. More...

The PocketSurfer(TM) Ends Web Surfing Pains for Cell Phone Users

General PDA

image According to some in the wireless industry, web access for road warriors and other mobile users is as easy as pulling out a Blackberry(TM) handheld device, wireless PDA or Internet-enabled cell phone. Ask the actual users of mobile Internet technology, however, and you'll often get a far different story.

Tiny display screens. Frustratingly small keyboards. Clipped or squashed web pages. Unreliable coverage. And download times rivaling the last Ice Age.

To end the aggravation, web access hardware manufacturer DataWind Corporation has developed a patented and highly affordable alternative: the PocketSurfer(TM) Web Viewer, the first cell phone accessory that provides a desktop-quality web experience in a device small enough for breast pocket or purse.

"All-in-one cellular Internet products try to do too many things, and wind up doing none of them well," said Suneet S. Tuli, chief executive officer of DataWind. "The PocketSurfer lets cell phone users access the technology they need, when they need it, with complete flexibility and convenience. And it does this at a lower overall cost than a Blackberry or Handspring Treo(TM)." More...

Motorola MPx: Launch Schedule & Memory Configuration

Windows Mobile News

Jason Dunn sends word from my HOME TOWN....and if your wondering why I am not at Mobius...join the club, im working on it. :-)

"I'm in Seattle at Microsoft's Mobius conference, and we just had a presentation from a Motorola representative where he confirmed that the Motorola MPx will be released before the end of the year...in SE Asia. He did, however, indicate that the phone would be available in other markets "shortly". I'm not sure what that means, but I'll venture a guess we'll see it released in North America in Q1 2005...let's hope that's not too far off. That's the good news - what follows is the bad."
