GVT Launches VoIP Services Powered by Xten

General PDA

Xten (OTCBB: XNWK), a provider of VoIP (Voice over IP) and Video over IP SIP softphones, and GVT, a foreign capital fixed Brazilian carrier, today announced that GVT is offering a complete range of VoIP services powered by Xten softphones.

For the residential market, GVT created WebFone and WebFone Virtual. Webfone will be exclusive to those who own a local GVT line. With the service, the GVT telephone installed at a client's home or office could be accessed from anywhere in the country or from the world via the Internet, as if it were a virtual domestic extension. For the corporate market, GVT has developed the OmniGVT family of solutions. The client can contract several telephone numbers from one or more available cities according to his need.

GVT's launching of VoIP services marks the first incursion of a Brazilian fixed telephone carrier fully established in the VoIP world. Migration to the new technology is considered as an inevitable direction that will deeply change the business model of all carriers within a few years. "This is the reinvention of telephony - both in terms of service providing as in the way to utilize it - the concept of distance is eliminated with VoIP, the same way that interurban email or local email does not exist, soon interurban or international telephone calls will not exist - the world will start being in fact a large and single global village" said Amos Genish, president of GVT. In the second phase, GVT plans to adopt applications such as videoconferencing and online collaboration. "We consulted many software suppliers all over the world until reaching Xten which has the solution we needed to offer, a simple and quick installation in any computer to our final customer with high- quality. Xten softphones are flexible, user-friendly and compact. The software even supports dial-up access with quality, which was a critical point in our decision," states Rodrigo Dienstmann, Marketing vice president of GVT. More...

A Review of the Loox 720 Pocket PC @ PocketPCThoughts.com

Windows Mobile News

Quote:

"The hardware side of Pocket PCs has been pretty quiet over the past year or so, and new models being introduced had very similar features in a given price range. But the hardware has gotten exciting again with the recent release of several new models from various manufacturers that feature screens with VGA resolution. Compared to the heavily promoted models from HP and Dell, the Loox 720 from Fujitsu Siemens is pretty much flying under the radar. Much of that is due to the fact that it’s not being marketed in the US or Canada. However, the 720 is widely available all over Europe in several languages, including German, French and Spanish, and it can be purchased from several vendors in the UK if you’re interested in an English language version."

Targus Unveils Notebook ChillHub Cooling Pad With Integrated USB 2.0 Hub

Personal Computer News

Targus Inc., inventor of the notebook case and the preeminent provider of mobile accessory solutions, today introduced the Notebook ChillHub™. The ChillHub advances Targus’ popular line of fan-based notebook cooling pads by adding an integrated four-port USB 2.0 hub to its capabilities. The combined features are ideal for notebook users who want to travel with fewer accessories.

The ChillHub addresses the excessive heat generation of today’s high-performance notebooks, which can shorten the life of internal components and circuitry and cause crashes. Notebooks can also overheat to the point where they are uncomfortable to rest on the lap and can damage desk and table varnishes or ad hoc work surfaces such as couches and carpeting.

Targus’ ChillHub alleviates these problems by implementing a two-fan cooling system to silently draw heat from the notebook and prevent the CPU from overheating during use. By circulating and dissipating heat under the notebook, the ChillHub eliminates the need for the notebook to activate its louder and power-consumptive internal fans and improves overall system performance. image A new means of propelling spacecraft being developed at the University of Washington could dramatically cut the time needed for astronauts to travel to and from Mars and could make humans a permanent fixture in space.

In fact, with magnetized-beam plasma propulsion, or mag-beam, quick trips to distant parts of the solar system could become routine, said Robert Winglee, a UW Earth and space sciences professor who is leading the project.

Currently, using conventional technology and adjusting for the orbits of both the Earth and Mars around the sun, it would take astronauts about 2.5 years to travel to Mars, conduct their scientific mission and return.

"We're trying to get to Mars and back in 90 days," Winglee said. "Our philosophy is that, if it's going to take two-and-a-half years, the chances of a successful mission are pretty low."

Targus Tunes Out Unwanted Sound With Active Noise Cancellation Headphones

Consumer Electronic News

Targus Inc., inventor of the notebook case and the preeminent provider of mobile accessory solutions, today announced the availability of its new Active Noise Cancellation Headphones. Designed to reduce ambient background noise and improve audio quality, the headphones make working on a notebook computer, listening to music on a CD player or MP3 player or watching a movie more enjoyable whether traveling, in the office or at home.

“Targus’ Active Noise Cancellation Headphones are an ideal companion for mobile executives or commuters,” said Henry Watanabe, product manager for Targus. “The headphones are compatible with most notebook computers running Windows or Macintosh-based operating systems, DVD players, portable music players and in-flight entertainment systems, or can simply be used by themselves to reduce unwanted noise and distraction.

Targus’ headphones operate by using a combination of active and passive noise cancellation. Each ear cup contains a tiny microphone that picks up the noise that users hear. During active noise cancellation the microphones feed the noise through an electric circuit where it is processed and causes the speakers to produce a sound that cancels out noise. This process allows audio to sound much clearer and crisper to the user. Passive noise cancellation results from the large size of the ear cups and ear pads that are designed to surround and seal the ear. This prevents a large degree of noise from entering the headphones. President Bush says we need to move to an Ownership Society

Off Topic

Ok, I like to stay away from actual political affiliation only because I believe you should vote for who makes the best choice as a leader and not so much as what party they run for, but anyway its no secret that I lean toward anti big business. This guys blog makes some great comments on how you should listen to statements and what they are really saying.

"...Increased corporate ownership of America is simply setting up fiefdoms for each area of our lives. Those that own the fief will get to set policy as a matter of corporate operation, not legislative policy in the traditional sense. It's an end run around the inherent limits the Founding Fathers built in to our government to keep this sort of thing from happening..."

"...When you hear the word "privatize", think "work outside the rules".

When you hear the words "free market" think "just let business do what it wants to make more money at your expense".

When you hear your own government refer to you as a "consumer" instead of citizen, know you are being exploited..."

It has changed the mobile phone industry as we see more phones coming out with integrated high quality lens. The built-in camera allows you to take pretty good quality images compared to those from K700i. In fact, when I showed the images captured to a number of friends, they were very impressed and were surprised that it came from S700i. Although the image quality is better than the K700i, the video capturing remains the same as the K700i which records in 3GP format. The camera also comes with 8x digital zoom. The photometry, flash and white balance functions helps to take better photos.

Headset-Free Operation on PDAs, Speaker Phones on Laptops

Toshiba’s SoftIPT SoftPhone for PDAs allows users to hold the PDA up to their ears to listen to calls, eliminating the need for a headset, while using it much like they would a cell phone. Aura enables streaming wireless stereo - via magnetic technology

Consumer Electronic News

Aura® Communications Technology, Inc. - the leader in magnetic communication for wireless transmission of music, voice and data - today announced availability of its LibertyLink® System Development Kit for enabling development of wireless voice and audio products. LibertyLink audio technology provides wireless stereo headphone capability for MP3 players, portable DVD players, audio-capable mobile phones - virtually any portable product where digital audio performance must be coupled with long battery life and low cost. The capability for digital audio sound quality from near field magnetic communication technology was announced today by Vincent Palermo, chief technology officer of Aura, at the Short Range Wireless 2004 Conference in Denver during his presentation on Magnetic Induction Near Field Communications for Portable Audio.

The System Development Kit, based on Aura’s LL888 system-on-chip transceiver, allows manufacturers to readily evaluate the wireless streaming audio capabilities of magnetic communication for use in their current and future product designs. The LibertyLink LL888 is currently scheduled for production quantity availability in the first quarter of 2005. LibertyLink products use a patented form of near field magnetic communication rather than conventional radio frequency technology (such as Bluetooth®) to enable digital audio performance in wireless devices. Unlike Bluetooth, which radiates in the unsecured and crowded frequency band at 2.4 GHz, LibertyLink technology is inherently private, secure and, by operating at 13 MHz, completely avoids the interference of the 2.4 GHz band.
