Updated Software Simplifies Commercial GPS Application Development

General PDA

StormSource Software, a GPS software component vendor located in Colorado, has announced the release of a new version of its “GPS.NET Global Positioning SDK” software designed to greatly minimize the development time for writing commercial-grade, location-based services. The software manages all communications with GPS devices, allowing software developers to focus on actual business uses of GPS. Other features such as enforcement of precision, support for mobile devices, and support for international use promise developers solid performance while saving thousands in development and testing.

The topic of precision enforcement is of special importance with StormSource and its president, Jon Person. “GPS devices are subject to gross positional error at times, even with DGPS and WAAS enhancements. Unfortunately, this is frequently overlooked by developers and even by third-party GPS component vendors,” warns Jon. “This could be disastrous in a commercial environment.” Jon encourages developers to take a second look at their software tools and consider finding alternatives if they do not provide the ability to monitor and control “dilution of precision.”

The newest version of GPS.NET, released today, improves precision with a new feature which uses a “fuzzy logic” algorithm to determine the reliability of a satellite fix. The release also focuses on saving business money spent on technical support with a feature called Automatic Device Discovery. Jon explains: “Typically, a customer has to tell the software where the GPS device can be found on their computer before it will start working. This is a lot to ask of people, especially those who may not be computer-savvy. Automatic Device Discovery solves this problem by quickly locating GPS devices and determining the proper settings. The software now just knows what to do to connect.” Jon adds that this feature typically finds devices on desktop and hand-held systems in less than two seconds. More...

An original logical game: Arrows 2.0 released

Windows Mobile News

Full Description:

There is a field - 6x6 cells. Each field can be empty or contain a colored brick with arrow on it. Arrow direction depends on the bricks (or vice-versa). You can manipulate these bricks: tap on the brick to move it accordingly to it's arrow direction. Groups of two or more bricks having the same color dissapear, but each turn some new bricks come to the field. Destroy bricks to earn points. The goal is to earn as much points as you can. The game ends when there are no empty cells left on the field so it's impossible to place incoming bricks on it.

In the new version:
- full graphic update;
- saving of the game before exit;
- if you don't make a move within 10 seconds, the button shows on the toolbar. On pressing it you are given a hint in the form of blinking arrow.

Certicom Licenses Elliptic Curve Cryptography to Avanza Technologies

Windows Mobile News

Certicom Corp. (TSX: CIC), the authority for strong, efficient cryptography, today announced it has licensed Security Builder Crypto 4.0, its cross-platform cryptographic toolkit, to Avanza Technologies to build Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) into its secure identity management product, It'sM(x)iMail. Avanza's product generates an email address that looks and acts like a standard email address but is encrypted with security features that dictate user identification and privileges. Avanza needed the strength of ECC to provide authentication and key exchange, and the small key size to make it all fit.

It'sM(x)iMail fights spam and viruses by creating a non-transferable email address that prevents others from using an email address without the owner's authority. The Avanza framework gives the email creator control over who can read the message, who can respond to it and how long the address remains valid.

For Avanza, Security Builder Crypto and its optimized ECC implementations was the obvious choice for its cryptography. First, Avanza needed a cyptosystem small enough to fit into an email address. Second, the ECC implementation had to be flexible enough to work on a number of different platforms, including Pocket PC, Linux and Microsoft Win32. Third, Avanza's customer-data protection technology required a cryptographic framework robust and efficient enough to process hundreds of thousands of key pairs in conjunction with a real-time customer database to prevent theft of customer information. Finally, Avanza needed the confidence that the public-key scheme used would remain viable for the life of a potential email address - potentially for many years. More...

Samsung Yepp-55i audio player review @ AcceleNation

Consumer Electronic News

Quote:

"Samsung has long been a pioneer in MP3 technology, always having a good retail presence at stores like Future Shop and Best Buy. The company's YEPP line of MP3 players dates back to a few years ago when the revolution in digital music started. Now, the company product line has matured into a stylish range of products for different target markets with different features.

Contrary to the iPod, one of the hottest MP3 items, which uses a hard drive as the medium for storage, Samsung trades off the large storage capacity of hard drive-based media players in favor of a smaller footprint: the result is a small, sleek design with the YEPP 55i. "

Siemens, the German phone maker brings us another new S series phone that has the latest in technology built into it. S65, supports GSM 900/1800/1900 and GPRS. If you are familiar with Siemens phone, S65 has improved on its user interface with icons and a joystick to access to the commonly used features like SMS, Camera etc.

S65 provides a screen display of 132 x 176 pixels for displaying information. With 16 bits colour depth, the screen images looks good but under strong sunlight, it appears dim. The phone has a nice dimension of 109 x 48 x 18mm and weighs only 98g. This is pretty light compared to the Motorola E398."
