PDA Viruses Could Get Nasty

General PDA

Viruses that target handhelds can be even more dangerous than their cousins that attack PCs, spawning self-replicating programs that hide easily, a security researcher told an audience of security professionals at the Black Hat Briefings conference here this week.

The first virus aimed at Pocket PC handhelds, revealed last week, could be far worse if it were modified slightly to carry a harmful payload, said Seth Fogie, a vice president of Airscanner, which develops security software for the Window Mobile platform.

The benign WinCE4.Duts.A (or just "Dust") virus was created as a demonstration of threats against personal digital assistants. However, Fogie noted, such programs could spread stealthily, logging keystrokes on the Pocket PC's "soft keyboard," and sending data stored on handhelds across the Internet.

How-To Turn your iPod in to a Universal Infrared Remote Control @ Engaget.com

General PDA

image This week’s How-To is a fun one, we take an iPod and turn it in to a universal infrared remote control which can be used to control all your home electronic equipment, or just about anything that uses a remote control, for example in our place we have our iPod controlling our TV, DVD Player, Direct TV, Ultimate TV PVR, Media Center PC, Xbox, XM Satellite Radio, Roomba and a few other random things like a Robot.

How did we do this? Basically, we “recorded” the “sounds” an infrared remote makes on a PC and then put them on an iPod as songs. Adding a special sound-to-IR converter then turns those sounds back to IR and allows you to use your iPod as a remote control. As an added bonus, it works up to 100 feet. It’s a slick all-in-one unit and we’re never going back to 6 remotes ever again.

Sony U-70 review- is that a PC in your pocket?

Personal Computer

image It seemed to me the U-70 would be perfect to install the Tablet OS on and convert it into a true Tablet PC. The Tablet OS has been designed from the ground up for mobile pen and ink devices and the U certainly fits that bill. The only way you can obtain the Tablet OS to install on the U is through an MSDN subscription. I have a membership so obtaining it was no problem. The Tablet OS is a superset of the Windows XP OS and the installation is just like a typical OS install. Microsoft has released a public RC of Windows XP SP2 which included a major enhancement to the Tablet OS for those devices that have the Tablet OS installed so after installing the basic Tablet OS I installed SP2. Once that finished I installed all the Sony drivers and programs that are specific to the U-70 and everything works like a charm. The only caveat for anyone installing a clean OS on the U- Sony includes drivers for the Synaptics track point that take over the USB ports for any device you try to install after the Synaptics. The workaround is to install all USB devices you want prior to installing the Synaptics ones. If you want to install other USB devices later you can uninstall the Synaptics drivers from the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS utility, install your USB device (and driver), and then reinstall the Synaptics driver.

Mobility Radeon 9800: First Look @ Gamers-Depot.com

Personal Computer News

It seems as if NVIDIA has had a long road to hoe in the Mobile market since the release of the Mobility Radeon 9700 by ATI; its current mobile GPUs simply can’t compete with regards to overall performance. ATI can attribute much of its success to its sheer experience with mobile graphics; after all they’ve been leading the market for well over a decade now. Chock up that with the development and deployment of industry-leading desktop GPU technology which filters down into laptops and you have the makings for what simply screams “Market leader”.

The Mobility Radeon 9800 looks to add more distance as it’s essentially an X800 core GPU with eight pixel and four vertex pipes – nothing to sneeze at by any standard.

Memory Card Shoot-Out: Four 512 MB Secure Digital Cards Compared @ PocketPC Thoughts.com

Consumer Electronic News

Quote:

"We live in a world of marketing buzz, where the letter "x" is thrown in front of a number to show how much faster something is, but how much of it is true? In the realm of flash memory cards, most vendors offer two or more types of cards: the regular version, and a professional version that's said to be much faster than the normal version of the card. I always thought that those "high speed" memory cards were something you could only take advantage of if you had a high-end professional camera, and that the extra top-end speed was wasted when used in a PDA, phone, or consumer-level device. Imagine my surprise when performing a test on a Pocket PC and I saw different numbers when using a high speed Sandisk memory card! This prompted me to do some further investigating, so I created a simple test to see how several cards from top vendors measure up against each other." More...

Tradewinds - coming this August from Astraware and Sandlot Games

General PDA

Tradewinds will let players captain their own flotilla of ships to exotic locations and trade goods with merchants to make a tidy profit. The aim of the game is to become famously rich, whether by careful trading, by sending scurvy pirate dogs to the bottom of the sea, or maybe a mix of both! While their ships are being repaired players can also relax on shore leave with a round of brews at the local alehouse where drinks (and game tips) are always on tap.

"This is the title trading game fans have been waiting for," comments Howard Tomlinson, CEO of Astraware, "with gameplay moving as quickly or as slowly as they like, take time to consider strategy or race to acquire wealth and glory. The choice of characters means they can play as an honest trader, a smuggler, or even rule the waves and out-gun the pirates – all at their own pace."

The Swedish mobile phone manufacturer Neonode has launched their first mobile phone, the Neonode N1

Windows Mobile News

image Over the last couple of years, Neonode have carried out an intense work of development in order to complete their first product. In order to make the introduction manageable, the N1 will at first be distributed in a limited edition and primarily to those who at an early stage signed the pre-order list.

The N1 is based on a unique and patented touch-screen that does not require pressure, but only a gentle touch on the screen. The user interface is operated using sweeping movements over the screen, enabling the user to navigate with her fingers only. Thus there is no need for a stylus/pen.

Since there is no need for a physical keyboard, the N1 consists mainly of the touch screen. Thus the screen covers an extremely large area of the N1.

The N1 builds on the principle that the user is able to fill the mobile phone with content according to his or her own needs and demands. The platform is open so that content and applications can be added with the help of an ordinary PC.

- All from the beginning, the interest has been enormous, says Magnus Goertz, one of the founders of Neonode. Unfortunately we have not earlier had the resources to respond to all the e-mail received, but everyone who has shown an interest in buying the N1 is noted. As we are getting the production started, we will offer the first mobile phones to those who placed their orders first.

In total there are approximately 20 000 pre-orders in Neonode's database and during the summer, offers of buying the mobile phone will go out in order of priority to the people first on the list. The offer goes out in form of personal codes for Neonode's web shop and is primarily directed towards people in Sweden.

- We will manufacture approximately one thousand mobile phones during the summer, so there will be far from enough for everyone that has shown an interest. However, we will be increasing the speed of production as soon as possible in order to meet the existing demand, says Goertz.

"Odyssey: a long and eventful journey; an intellectual or spiritual quest. Or, if you check out the official website, a fast-paced classic style space shooter game. Odyssey is a reliable example of a heavily plagiarised genre. The label says fast-paced, classic-style, space shooter and that is exactly what it is. Drop in a few phrases like ‘vertical scrolling’, ‘end of level guardians’, ‘collectible weapon power-ups’ and you are going to be able to paint a fairly accurate mental image of the game before you even start it up."

Dept. of Homeland Security Says to Stop Using IE --"Whatever, Smacktards"

Off Topic

Ok, I am fan of Slashdot.org and read it daily but the headline of ”Dept. of Homeland Security Says to Stop Using IE” is a bit misleading and even just flagrant sensationalism. They reference a Yahoo news article (which is a suspect news source anyway) and nowhere could I find the DoHS saying to stop using IE other than recommending the use of other browsers, which by inference could mean “stop using” but the DoHS goes on to say “Alternative browsers such as Mozilla or Netscape may not protect users...”. So what the hell kind of recommendation is that? Let’s all stay off the net from now on and that will fix the security problem…oh wait, what would I do all day then.

In Microsoft Server 2003 IE comes with Enhanced Security Configuration and that adds ample security to IE to the point of making surfing the web difficult but very secure. I am sure it won’t be long till those features make their way in the regular IE. If you have MS Server 2003 give it try.

Firefox is being applauded as a good alterative however I have not tried it myself. I think any popular browser will become vulnerable to exploits as they gain popularity and at least Microsoft has an army of paid coders to fix issues quickly. I really hate switching apps all the time and prefer to stick with one vendor.
