Not only are all current GBA emulators flirting with copyright laws, they're now violating a Nintendo patent.

Nintendo has recently been awarded a patent for "a software emulator...emulating a handheld video game platform," or in English, any and all Game Boy emulators. Those listed in the patent give the examples of cell phones, PDAs and the video screens found in airplane seats, but in effect, the patent refers to just about anything that duplicates or enhances the Game Boy line's hardware via emulation.

STMicroelectronics Enters Trusted Platform Market with Complete TCG 1.2 Solution

General PDA

STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM) announces the introduction of a personal computer security solution meeting the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) 1.2 specification, which was published in November 2003. The TCG is a broad alliance of major hardware and software companies which aims to create more secure computing environments through the use of hardware building blocks and cross-platform software interfaces, without compromising functional integrity, privacy or individual rights.

The need for trusted computing has come about due to the increasing vulnerability to both physical and electronic attack of personal computers in general, and of laptop computers and other portable devices in particular. The concept is expected to be used in the majority of new computers within the next few years, based on TCG specifications; it allows validation of both the computer and its user, and provides secure storage for critical data and passwords. It can verify that a 'trusted process' should run, and establish 'trusted relationships' with other computers to reduce opportunities for viruses and other attacks. More...

Opus Technologies Titanium Tiny Tower TT-501 Review @ Club Overclocker

PocketPCTechs.com is truly a PDA enthusiast's accessory supplier

Off Topic

OK, a little off topic but I ordered a bundle of gear for my XDA II from PPCTechs and received it in less than 24 hours. Granted I am in Seattle and they are in California so it's not a huge distance but they were very responsive.

I mentioned them in the Recon article we just posted in Reviews because I use the Write Shield for my i-mate XDA II and really have found no screen protector I like better. I prefer a smooth surface with a satinesque finish to provide firm tactile feedback from the stylus as it move across the PDA screens surface. PPCTechs Write Shield provides that effect in spades.

Anyway back to the package, I am trying out the Sync-n-charge retractable cable, 3 in one stylus, and the much sought after stereo headphone adapter that converts the funky 4 contact micro headset jack into a standard stereo 1/8” jack. Well, it doesn’t convert the jack itself obviously but it’s an adapter rather. So now I can listen to my MP3’s on the road right from my PDA...whoo hoo! I have a Radio Shack adapter but its just not quite the right dimensions and is a little finicky, not to mention that the Radio Shack adapter sticks out about an inch from the side of my PDA. Well I’ll stop there before this turns into a review. Expect a full review after I have had a chance to play with the new gear for a week or two, then I will give you the full scoop.

Oh yeah and here’s the link to PPCTechs: www.pocketpctechs.com More...

Graphics advancements span PCs to cell phones

Mobile Phones

Although PCs may provide most of Nvidia’s near-term revenues, the company also remains focused on cell-phone and PDA opportunities that last year’s acquisition of MediaQ enabled it to pursue. Nvidia has, at least for the moment, shelved MediaQ’s ARM core-inclusive chips but is continuing the development of multimedia coprocessors. The latest products include the GoForce 3000, targeting $149 cell phones, and the higher end GoForce 4000 for fuller featured $199 phones. GoForce 3000 embeds 320 kbytes of SRAM, interfaces to 2 million-pixel camera modules, hardware-accelerates 2- and 3-D graphics functions, and decodes CIF-resolution MPEG-4 Simple Profile and H.263 video streams at 30 frames/sec. GoForce 4000 doubles the amount of embedded memory over its lower end sibling and adds CIF-resolution, 30-frame/sec video-encoding capabilities, along with 3 million-pixel still-camera support. Nvidia has its work cut out for it; the market for handheld multimedia accelerators is quickly becoming crowded. Intel’s (www.intel.com) 2700G, previously code-named Marathon, is a formidable foe, especially when the company bundles it with the latest generation PXA270 XScale processors.

The Secret to Success of PalmOne's Zire

PalmOne News

What makes the Zire line different? It was created specifically for the consumer market, not for corporate accounts (which were having a problem justifying handheld computers anyway).

Individuals continue to be the primary source of buying decisions in this market. In addition, the consumer continues to buy aggressively. Look at the Apple iPod: In a market that grew a whopping 87 percent (the PC market grew at less than 20 percent for comparison), iPod sales grew 900 percent. If you build the right product and market it effectively, the consumers will buy. I personally believe that if PalmOne could approach Apple's marketing quality and budget, it could also approach iPod's growth numbers.

PDACorps has reviewed Ducklets!

Windows Mobile News

Ducklets is a new game from ducklets.com. It is a fairly simple duck shooting game with some neat little twists and a very silly background story. Here is a blurb from their review:

"I've never really felt very threatened by ducks. I just thought I'd share that with you before I get excited by the prospect of blasting hundreds of them out of the sky in a mad, murderous frenzy. Ducklets plays on a non-scrolling, portrait-oriented screen. Bizarre 3D duck characterisations flock about, large eyes staring wildly, and you have to shoot them by tapping your stylus at the screen, much like a rather more tactile version of a light-gun. The ducks present no threat to you or anyone else, except in the minds of the developers, so you have to trust that this wholesale duck slaughter-fest is justified and just go for it."

Monarch Hornet 64 Pro Barebones SFF System Review @ Bjorn3D

Personal Computer News

Different approach to the SFF market than the likes of Biostar, MSI, Shuttle and the other big name mobo manufacturers by offering a system that uses a micro-ATX mobo.

Quote-
"Monarch sells a full range of components and accessories and complete systems, including desktop systems, servers, workstations and various custom systems. One of these custom systems, which we will be looking at today, is the Hornet 64 Pro. Monarch's Hornet line of PCs is their attempt to capitalize on the current popularity of the small form factor PC. However, the Hornets are quite a bit bigger (nearly twice as big) than the popular SFF systems from Shuttle and Biostar. To Monarch's advantange, this allows them to offer micro-ATX boards that feature three PCI slots and one AGP slot and more room for other components in the roomier Hornet chassis. The Hornet 64 Pro offers support for the AMD Athlon 64 processor via the VIA K8T800 chipset on Gigabyte's GA-K8VT800M motherboard."
